Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) leader Maulana Fazlur Rehman called on Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday to play a proactive role in advancing legislation regarding the registration of madrassahs (religious seminaries) across the provinces.
In a telephonic conversation, the two leaders discussed the matter of religious seminaries, with Rehman urging the prime minister to ensure the proper legal framework for their registration.
PM Shehbaz assured Rehman of his full support, promising to initiate discussions with provincial chief ministers to facilitate the legislation. Senator Irfan Siddiqui, a senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) member, later met with Rehman to discuss the country’s political situation and the ongoing negotiation process.
Siddiqui briefed Rehman on the dialogues with opposition parties, emphasizing that political discussions were crucial to the democratic process. Rehman echoed the sentiment, stating that refusing dialogue was contrary to democratic principles. He emphasized that only through direct talks could the current political deadlock be resolved and the country could achieve stability and unity.
Additionally, Siddiqui expressed his well-wishes for Rehman’s health and commended his efforts in addressing issues related to madrassah registration.
Earlier reports indicated that the registration of religious seminaries had moved forward through dialogue and mutual understanding. In a related development, President Asif Ali Zardari signed the Societies Registration (Amendment) Act 2024, following the advice of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, and the official Gazette notification was issued by National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq.
