Former Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Passes Away at 92

Former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away at the age of 92 on December 26, 2024. He was admitted to AIIMS in Delhi earlier in the day after a sudden deterioration in his health.

Dr. Singh concluded a remarkable political and parliamentary career in April 2024 when he retired from the Rajya Sabha, where he had served since October 1991. His tenure in the Rajya Sabha marked over three decades of dedicated public service, beginning shortly after his appointment as Union Finance Minister in the PV Narasimha Rao-led government.

Born on September 26, 1932, in a village in Punjab, undivided India, Dr. Singh’s life was marked by extraordinary contributions to India’s economic and political landscape. He initially joined public service as the Chief Economic Advisor in the Ministry of Finance in 1972, showcasing his expertise in economic policy and governance.

Between 1982 and 1985, he served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, a pivotal role in shaping the nation’s monetary policies. However, his most impactful legacy emerged during his tenure as Union Finance Minister, where he played a transformative role in India’s economic reforms of the early 1990s. These reforms liberalized the Indian economy, opened it to global markets, and laid the foundation for its modernization.

Dr. Singh also served as India’s Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, overseeing a decade of significant economic growth and social reforms. A respected statesman and economist, his contributions leave a lasting legacy.
