First Round of PTI-Government Talks Concludes, Written Demands Next

PTI-Government Talks

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has announced plans to present its demands in writing during the next meeting with the government’s negotiation committee, following a productive first round of talks.

These discussions, held on Monday at the Parliament House, Islamabad, marked the beginning of a much-anticipated dialogue aimed at easing political tensions in the country.

National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, who chaired the meeting, revealed that the next session is scheduled for January 2, 2025. At that time, PTI will submit a formal charter of demands.

Speaking at a press conference following the talks, Sadiq expressed gratitude to both government and opposition leaders for their constructive approach, emphasizing the importance of working together for Pakistan’s betterment, political stability, and democracy.

The dialogue commenced with a recitation from the Holy Quran and prayers for the country’s prosperity. Both sides described the atmosphere as conducive, underscoring the need for continued engagement.

In a joint communiqué, it was reiterated that Parliament remains the appropriate platform for resolving political issues.

The government delegation included Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, PM’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah, Senator Irfan Siddiqui, PPP leaders Raja Pervaiz Ashraf and Naveed Qamar, and MQM-P leader Farooq Sattar.

PTI’s team comprised Asad Qaiser, Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC) Chairman Sahibzada Hamid Raza, and Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) leader Allama Raja Nasir Abbas.

PTI’s Asad Qaiser shared that their primary demands include the release of detained party workers, including Imran Khan, and the formation of a judicial commission to investigate the May 9 and November 26 incidents.

He confirmed that the government had agreed to facilitate meetings with Khan and acknowledged the plight of imprisoned workers.

Government representatives stressed the importance of dialogues being free from external pressures, noting that genuine progress requires good faith efforts from both sides. They also emphasized unity in combating terrorism, paying tribute to the sacrifices of the armed forces.

The meeting represents a critical step in reducing political polarization. Both sides expressed optimism, with PTI’s Qaiser stating that discussions had set the groundwork for more formal negotiations in the coming sessions.
