ISLAMABAD: Meezan Bank denied reports of a “data breach” on Thursday following social media claims by numerous customers about unauthorized transactions from their debit and credit cards.
Over the past week, several social media users shared incidents of large sums being transferred from their accounts without their consent, with some speculating about a possible data leak.
In an advisory issued today, Meezan Bank categorically rejected these claims, stating, โThe rumours regarding a data breach at Meezan Bank are entirely false.โ The bank assured customers that their data was โcompletely safeโ and emphasized, โthere has been no security breach whatsoever.โ
The statement further clarified that the bank was actively addressing the issue and ensuring compensation for affected customers.
โAll disputed transactions reported to the bank recently were unsecured e-commerce transactions. These are covered under the chargeback mechanism of International Payment Schemes and are being fully reimbursed to the affected customers,โ the advisory explained.
The bank also urged customers to adopt precautions when using their cards for online transactions.
One such incident was reported by Malik Zaka, a resident of Islamabad, who shared his experience on the Facebook group โVoice of Customer.โ Zaka stated that multiple unauthorized transactions on his Meezan Bank debit card resulted in a loss of Rs2.1 million, describing the situation as โextremely alarming.โ
