ISLAMABAD: The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has issued a stay order, temporarily halting proceedings at the Islamabad Election Tribunal on a petition filed by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidate Shoaib Shaheen.
The stay order concerns Shaheen’s challenge to the victory of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Tariq Fazal Chaudhry in National Assembly constituency NA-47.
IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq presided over the hearing, issuing the stay order to suspend tribunal proceedings on Shaheen’s petition until further notice. The court also directed both parties to submit their responses.
This stay order, however, applies solely to the petition related to NA-47. The Election Tribunal is free to continue with cases concerning the other two Islamabad constituencies. Hearings for all three constituencies are scheduled for December 24.
In addition to contesting the election results for NA-47, Shaheen has filed a separate petition in the IHC, challenging the constitution of the new Election Tribunal. This legal move questions the Election Commission’s decision regarding the tribunal’s formation.
