Former Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi has filed a petition in the Sindh High Court, challenging the constitutionality of the 26th Constitutional Amendment. Abbasi’s petition requests that the amendment be declared unconstitutional and calls for a suspension of new judicial appointments in the high courts until a ruling is made on the matter.
The petition, filed by Abbasi’s lawyer, Barrister Moeez Jafri, names several parties, including the federal government, the Sindh government, Senate Chairman Yousaf Raza Gilani, National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, and the Election Commission of Pakistan.
Additionally, Abbasi’s plea seeks the suspension of the Judicial Commission’s operations while the case is under review. The former prime minister has expressed concerns about the consequences of the 26th Amendment and urged the court to take swift action to resolve the issue.
The 26th Amendment has sparked controversy, particularly regarding its impact on judicial appointments and whether it aligns with constitutional principles.
