Minister of State for Information Technology (IT), Shaza Fatima Khawaja, acknowledged on Monday that Pakistan’s internet speed falls short of the required standards, highlighting the urgent need for faster and more reliable internet to support the nation’s digital growth.
Addressing the National Broadband Network Forum, Shaza Fatima emphasized the importance of internet connectivity in today’s world and stated that the government is committed to improving the country’s digital infrastructure.
“While we have made progress, internet speed is still not where it should be,” she said. “However, with the ongoing efforts and upcoming initiatives, we expect significant improvements in the near future.”
The Minister of State outlined two key reforms aimed at addressing the issue: the fiberization policy and the planned introduction of 5G technology.
“The fiberization policy will enhance broadband connectivity, and the introduction of 5G will provide faster speeds and broader coverage across the country,” she explained.
Shaza Fatima also announced the formation of a National Digital Commission, which will be led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and involve provincial chief ministers and key ministers. The commission will oversee the development of digital infrastructure and is expected to create a comprehensive five-year action plan to tackle digital challenges and encourage technological investment in Pakistan.
The Minister also revealed that the Digital Pakistan Bill, which aims to foster digital growth and technological advancement, will be presented in the National Assembly today. The bill, expected to pass soon, will lay the groundwork for the National Digital Commission.
“We are hopeful that the opposition will support the bill, ensuring swift progress in Pakistan’s digital transition,” she said.
In addition to these measures, Shaza Fatima assured that cybersecurity remains a priority for the government. “Pakistan faces a significant threat from cyberattacks, with incidents occurring daily,” she said. “The protection of data and strengthening cybersecurity are top priorities, and we are dedicated to safeguarding the nation’s digital assets.”
Furthermore, Khawaja confirmed that Pakistan will auction the 5G spectrum in April, with the combined efforts to improve 4G services expected to significantly boost the country’s internet capabilities.
