The Jersey Cyber Security Centre (JCSC) has issued a strong warning about a sophisticated cryptocurrency scam targeting Jersey residents, politicians, and news outlets. The fraud operation employs fake advertisements styled as genuine news articles, promoting a fictional cryptocurrency service named NovusX and claiming unrealistic financial gains.
Matt Palmer, director of the JCSC, disclosed that the scam is part of a larger international operation. “This group has conducted similar fraudulent campaigns in smaller jurisdictions, including the Isle of Man, Gibraltar, and South Africa,” Palmer stated.
The scammers’ tactics include using doctored images and false endorsements from prominent local figures. A prior incident in September saw the misuse of photos of the bailiff and the late journalist Gary Burgess to create a false sense of legitimacy.
Palmer warned that such scams are unlikely to stop anytime soon, even if the perpetrators modify their methods or shift to other platforms. “These schemes are persistent and may continue to exploit public figures to deceive victims,” he added.
Jersey residents are urged to stay cautious and watch for the following red flags:
- Overly optimistic or exaggerated financial promises
- Quotes falsely attributed to respected individuals
- Messages designed to create a false sense of urgency
- Basic factual inaccuracies within promotional content
The JCSC advises the public to be skeptical of unsolicited financial offers and to verify the authenticity of investment opportunities before taking any action.
With cybercriminals constantly refining their techniques, heightened awareness and critical thinking are the best defenses against falling victim to such scams.
