KARACHI:K-Electric (KE) has disconnected power to several Pakistan Railways colonies and installations over unpaid electricity bills, causing significant disruptions.
Dispute Over Outstanding Dues
According to KE, Pakistan Railways owes Rs. 430 million across 31 connections. The power utility stated that continuing to supply electricity without payment is unsustainable, despite repeated reminders and assurances from railway officials.
Nasir Khalili, Divisional Superintendent of Pakistan Railways Karachi, described the escalating dispute as deeply affecting operations. Power cuts have disrupted critical functions, including online ticket booking, and impacted 38 passenger trains departing Karachi daily.
Claims and Counterclaims
Khalili emphasized the Karachi division’s role in generating daily revenue of Rs. 50-60 million for Pakistan Railways. He also claimed that KE owes Pakistan Railways Rs. 70 billion in unpaid dues accumulated over the past decade. Khalili warned of potential actions, including withholding future payments, if the power issue persists.
KE’s Position
KE stated that power could be restored if Railways provided assurances of clearing outstanding dues and making timely monthly payments. However, the company accused Railways of repeatedly failing to honor such commitments, which led to the current situation.
The ongoing standoff threatens to exacerbate operational challenges for Pakistan Railways while highlighting broader issues in financial management and inter-agency accountability.
