KP govt helicopter ‘attacked’ in Parachinar

A helicopter carrying a delegation from the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government came under fire on Saturday while traveling from Kohat to Parachinar. Despite the attack, all passengers and the helicopter landed safely in Parachinar.

The delegation, led by KP Law Minister Aftab Alam Advocate, was tasked with addressing rising tensions in the Kurram district and reviving the peace jirga to restore order. The group included Chief Secretary Aslam Chaudhry, the Kohat DIG, the Kohat Division commissioner, and other senior officials.

The mission was initiated on the directives of KP Chief Minister Ali Amin Gandapur to assess the law and order situation and promote community-driven solutions. Sources confirmed that unidentified attackers opened fire as the helicopter neared Parachinar, but the crew ensured a safe landing.

Speaking afterward, Chief Secretary Chaudhry emphasized ongoing efforts to resolve the Kurram district’s issues through dialogue and impose a ceasefire. He acknowledged that gunfire persisted in certain areas but assured that meetings with tribal elders were underway to restore peace. He also highlighted the presence of Pakistan Army troops in the region.

Violence has escalated in Lower Kurram, with heavy and automatic weapons used in clashes between rival tribal groups. Police reported that at least 15 people have died, and 25 others have been injured since Friday night.

The unrest began after an attack on passenger vehicles triggered retaliatory confrontations. In response, authorities have closed schools across the district and advised residents to remain indoors due to the volatile situation.
