Lawmakers Supporting 26th Amendment Guilty of Treason Against Pakistan, Claims Former PM Imran Khan Amid PTI Inquiry into Party Violations

Former Prime Minister Imran Khan accused those who supported the 26th Constitutional Amendment of committing “treason against Pakistan,” as PTI investigates allegations of party violations among its lawmakers.

“I want to make it clear that anyone who voted in favor of the 26th Constitutional Amendment has undermined Pakistan’s constitutional foundation and betrayed the nation,” Khan stated to reporters at Adiala Jail.

On October 21, the government narrowly passed amendments that increased lawmakers’ authority over judicial appointments, following recent court decisions favoring opposition leader Imran Khan. The reforms alter the appointment process for the Chief Justice of Pakistan, impact bench formations, and include a provision to phase out interest-based banking “as far as practicable by January 1, 2028.”

Reports suggest some PTI lawmakers defected to support the amendment despite party opposition. PTI member Sher Afzal Marwat revealed on Aaj News’ Spotlight with Munizae Jahangir that 21 PTI National Assembly members broke ranks during the vote.

Khan described the “mental anguish” of his confinement, calling it “deplorable and shameful,” and alleging mistreatment. He claimed that his cell’s power was cut for five days, leaving him in darkness, and that he was denied outdoor time for 10 days. For several weeks, he was allegedly barred from visits by his doctors, family, and legal team.

Despite the hardships, Khan vowed to continue fighting for Pakistan’s “Haqeeqi Azadi [true freedom].” He criticized PML-N President Nawaz Sharif, alleging Sharif’s foreign assets show disregard for Pakistan’s welfare, accusing him of returning only to exploit the nation before returning abroad.

Khan also expressed concern over the “abduction” of his aide, Waqar Panjutha, describing it as a “personal vendetta.” He condemned the country’s “lawlessness,” noting that it has been 21 days since Panjutha’s disappearance, questioning the silence of the judiciary on such incidents.
