Canada Accuses Indian minister Amit Shah of Orchestrating Attacks on Sikh Separatists

Sikh Separatists

On Tuesday, Canada made serious allegations against Indian Minister of Home Affairs Amit Shah, asserting that he was behind plots aimed at targeting Sikh separatists residing on Canadian territory.

This accusation highlights a growing diplomatic rift between Canada and India, especially considering Shah’s close ties to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a prominent figure in Hindu nationalist politics.

The claims originated from a report , which cited statements from Canadian officials alleging that Shah was orchestrating a campaign of violence and intimidation against Sikh separatists in Canada.

Canadian Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister David Morrison confirmed to a parliamentary panel that he had informed the newspaper about Shah’s alleged involvement, although he did not provide specific evidence or details to support the claims.

The Indian government has quickly dismissed these allegations as unfounded, reiterating its position that it has no involvement in any such activities.

The relationship between Canada and India has been strained since the mid-October expulsion of Indian diplomats by Canada, which was linked to the murder of Sikh separatist leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar on Canadian soil.

This incident led to a reciprocal expulsion of Canadian diplomats by India, further escalating tensions between the two nations.

Canada has accused Sikh separatists of being terrorists and threats to its security, while India has categorized them as such, often invoking historical events such as the anti-Sikh riots of 1984, which resulted in the deaths of thousands.

These recent tensions are not isolated. Allegations of Indian targeting of Sikh separatists abroad have emerged before, including a case involving a former Indian intelligence officer, Vikash Yadav, who was charged in the United States for allegedly plotting to murder Gurpatwant Singh Pannun, a vocal critic of India and a dual citizen of the U.S. and Canada.

The FBI has cautioned against any retaliatory actions aimed at U.S. residents, highlighting the delicate nature of these allegations on international relations.

The situation has placed a strain not only on Canada-India relations but also on the broader ties between Washington and New Delhi, as India is often seen as a strategic partner for the West in counterbalancing China’s influence in the region.

The outcome of these accusations and diplomatic tensions could have significant implications for the geopolitical landscape in South Asia and beyond.
