Independent senator Faisal Vawda has stated that more constitutional amendments are forthcoming following the recent 26th Constitutional Amendment, which introduced judicial reforms in Pakistan, including changes to the chief justice appointment process.
During his appearance on Aaj News’ Rubaroo on Thursday, Vawda remarked, “I had previously indicated that there would be further amendments and developments. I will keep the nation updated on all the drama surrounding Imran Khan.”
When asked about potential legal adjustments, he indicated that he would reveal more when the time is right, adding, “It’s not just about the 27th constitutional amendment.”
The government recently passed amendments that empower lawmakers to appoint top judges, who have made several rulings in favor of opposition leader Imran Khan.
Relations between Islamabad and the judiciary have soured since the February elections, which were marred by allegations of rigging. The courts have sided with Khan’s party, the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), amidst claims that the judiciary is being used to undermine their campaign.
President Asif Ali Zardari appointed Justice Yahya Afridi as the next chief justice of Pakistan, following a decision by the Special Parliamentary Committee. Justice Afridi will serve a three-year term beginning October 26, as reported by PTV News.
Vawda also commented on the ban on visits to Khan in Adiala Jail, suggesting it was requested by PTI leaders who failed to follow Khan’s guidance for protests. He mentioned that a letter from U.S. lawmakers seeking Khan’s release has deepened divisions between him and the establishment.
Vawda expressed his intent to advocate for Khan’s sister’s release, emphasizing his belief in her sincerity toward Khan. He clarified that he has not used the term “deal” regarding the potential release of Khan’s wife, Bushra Bibi, questioning the recent preparations at Bani Gala.
He speculated that Khan is unlikely to be released anytime soon and suggested that more individuals would visit him on October 26. Vawda also predicted that former spymaster Lieutenant General (retd) Faiz Hameed would face court-martial.
He refrained from discussing a misunderstanding with Defence Minister Khawaja Asif and claimed that Justice Afridi was selected as chief justice due to perceived inconsistencies in the previous decisions of two judges. He mentioned that if necessary, amendments regarding the military could be introduced to the Constitution.
Vawda asserted, “You cannot run this country for an hour without the army,” reflecting on the complexities of political character in Pakistan. He expressed his determination to protect Khan from unjust punishment, likening politicians to “character actors” deserving of accolades despite receiving criticism instead of rewards.
