As Moldova prepares for its presidential election and EU referendum this Sunday, President Maia Sandu is optimistic about both her re-election and the approval of the EU referendum. This pivotal moment could significantly advance her efforts to steer Moldova toward European Union membership.
A total of 11 candidates are competing in the October 20 vote, with current polls indicating that Sandu, from the Party of Action and Solidarity, is leading, followed by pro-Russian candidate Alexander Stoianoglo from the Party of Socialists.
For Moldova, the vote from its diaspora is expected to be crucial in determining the country’s trajectory either furthering European integration or leaning towards Russia.
Oleg Brega, a Moldovan citizen residing in Romania, is a strong supporter of Sandu and EU accession. He has participated in numerous protests in Moldova and expressed his desire to return, although he fears the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Brega represents a significant portion of the Moldovan diaspora, which accounts for roughly 25% of the population. This group played a vital role in Sandu’s 2020 victory, where high turnout among overseas voters favored a European future.
In the lead-up to the election, disinformation campaigns have surged, with claims that Russia is attempting to interfere by busing voters to polling stations in Moscow. Reports suggest that Russia has allocated over $15 million to influence the election against Sandu.
Despite these challenges, many Moldovans are determined to participate. Ionut, a young business owner, emphasizes the importance of moving away from Russia’s influence and sees the election as a critical juncture for Moldova. He believes that strengthening ties with Europe is essential for national security.
Georgia, facing similar challenges, is also watching Moldova closely as it prepares for its own elections.
A favorable outcome in Moldova could serve as a crucial signal to other nations in the region about the viability of EU aspirations amidst rising geopolitical tensions.
As the election date approaches, Moldovans are hopeful that their votes will lead to a brighter European future, despite the looming threats and uncertainties. Oleg remains optimistic, stating, “It would be a huge shock if she loses. I feel confident we will win.”
