HEC Announces Closure of Colleges and Universities in Punjab for Next Two Days

Decision Made in Anticipation of Protests by PTI and Students

The Higher Education Department has announced that all colleges and universities in Punjab will remain closed on Friday and Saturday in anticipation of protests by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and students.

This announcement was made in a notification issued on Thursday, meaning there will be a holiday for high schools and universities over the next two days.

PTI, led by Imran Khan, has called for nationwide protests against proposed judicial reforms that the party believes could undermine the judiciary.

As of 8:30 PM on Thursday, plans for the protests are in motion. JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman is set to meet with PTI leadership to discuss a draft agreement he has reached with the PPP.

Meanwhile, students in Punjab have taken to the streets over the alleged rape of a college student in Lahore. However, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz dismissed claims on Wednesday regarding the alleged incident, calling the rumors spread on social media a “fabricated story.”

Last week, reports of the alleged rape went viral, leading to the arrest of a security guard at the college who was reportedly involved.

In light of these developments, the Punjab government has imposed Section 144 of the CrPC across the province, banning gatherings of more than five people. This restriction will be effective from October 18 to October 19, prohibiting all forms of protests and similar activities.
