The Lahore police have launched a crackdown on leaders and activists of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf (PTI) ahead of their planned protest in Islamabad on October 15.
According to police sources, comprehensive lists have been compiled of those involved in organizing the protests. The crackdown, led by the Organized Crime Unit in coordination with the operations and investigation wings, targets both previously wanted individuals and those recently added to police watchlists. The focus is particularly on PTI workers involved in cases stemming from protests on May 9 and October 21, 2023.
Authorities have instructed the Special Branch to closely monitor local PTI leaders and activists, with a clear directive that action will be taken against anyone found mobilizing or organizing for the rally. The police have also been tasked with preventing PTI workers in Lahore from traveling to Islamabad for the protest at D-Chowk.
As Pakistan prepares to host the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit, concerns have been raised about potential disruptions to the country’s international image and stability, particularly following PTI’s announcement of the protest. The summit, expected to attract distinguished guests from various nations, presents a crucial opportunity for Pakistan to enhance its international standing.
PTI leader Sheikh Waqas Akram announced via social media that the party’s political committee has directed organizational heads to prepare for a large-scale demonstration. This protest is set to coincide with the arrival of foreign delegations, leading many to perceive it as a deliberate attempt to undermine Pakistan’s reputation on the international stage.
