Elahi Bux Soomro, a former Speaker of the National Assembly and a prominent figure in Pakistani politics, has passed away, as confirmed by family sources.
Born in 1926 in the Jacobabad district, Soomro hailed from the influential Soomro family of Shikarpur, which has played a significant role in Sindh’s political landscape for many decades.
Soomro was the son of Moula Bux Soomro and the brother of Ahmed Mian Soomro. An accomplished engineer by profession, he made his entry into politics during a transformative period in Pakistan’s history.
His political career began in earnest when he served as a minister during General Zia-ul-Haq’s regime. In 1985, he was elected unopposed to the National Assembly, solidifying his influence within the government.
Following the dismissal of Prime Minister Muhammad Khan Junejo’s administration, Soomro was appointed Minister for Information and Broadcasting in the interim cabinet formed by Zia-ul-Haq on May 29, 1988.
