Constitutional Bill: Government Recalls Lawmakers from Abroad Ahead of October 15 Deadline

ISLAMABAD: Parliamentary leaders from the ruling coalition have instructed lawmakers currently abroad to return by October 15, according to sources. This directive comes as political parties engage in consultations and public discussions regarding the proposed 26th constitutional amendment.

Several senators and a significant number of National Assembly members are currently out of the country. Reports indicate that over ten lawmakers from the treasury are abroad, including prominent figures such as PML-N’s Dr. Tariq Fazal Chaudhry and veteran PPP leader Syed Khursheed Shah.

Additionally, Senator Rana Mehmood ul Hassan from the PPP, BAP’s Dinesh Kumar, PML-Q’s Hussain Illahi, and Senator Abdul Qadir are also overseas on official visits.

Bilawal Bhutto, Chairman of the People’s Party, emphasized the urgency of passing the constitutional amendments, stating, “If I were the law minister, I would have aimed to finalize the amendments before October 25.”

He reiterated the government’s intention to expedite the process given the current political climate, expressing a desire for consensus on the amendments.

Bhutto also noted that the final decision on who will appoint the head judge of the constitutional court remains unresolved. The government is keen on reaching an agreement among all stakeholders to ensure smooth passage of the amendments.

As the October 15 deadline approaches, the coalition’s efforts to consolidate support and finalize discussions around the constitutional changes intensify, with a clear focus on facilitating a unified approach to governance and constitutional reforms.

The upcoming days will be critical in shaping the future legislative landscape as lawmakers are expected to align their strategies and return to facilitate this significant political process.
