US authorities arrested Afghan man for allegedly planning an attack on Election Day

The US Department of Justice has arrested 27-year-old Nasir Ahmad Tawhedi, an Afghan national, for allegedly planning an attack on Election Day in support of the Islamic State (ISIS).

Tawhedi, who resides in Oklahoma City, is accused of orchestrating a violent assault on US soil, according to FBI Director Christopher Wray.

Prosecutors allege that Tawhedi was amassing firearms and attempting to liquidate his family’s assets in preparation for moving abroad. He faces multiple charges, including providing material support to a foreign terrorist organization and attempting to acquire firearms for terrorism purposes.

Authorities revealed that Tawhedi conspired with a juvenile relative, also of Afghan descent, and engaged with ISIS propaganda online.

He allegedly made donations to a charity identified as a front for ISIS activities. Tawhedi reportedly sought AK-47 rifles for the planned attack and met undercover FBI agents on October 7 to buy weapons and ammunition, leading to his arrest.

Following his capture, he reportedly confirmed his intentions to target large crowds on Election Day, expressing a desire to die during the attack.

Tawhedi entered the United States in September 2021 on a special immigrant visa, accompanied by his wife and child. At the time of his arrest, he was living in Oklahoma City, and it remains uncertain whether he has secured legal representation.

Attorney General Merrick Garland reiterated the government’s commitment to combating threats posed by ISIS and its affiliates, emphasizing the dedication to investigating and prosecuting individuals who pose risks to national security.
