The ruling underscores the unfortunate reality that many women are denied their legal inheritance rights. A three-member Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Qazi Faiz Isa, issued a significant decision on Tuesday concerning the inheritance rights of sisters.
The court emphasized the need to protect women’s rights to their inherited properties, addressing a persistent issue where women are often denied their rightful shares under Sharia law. It noted that some legal professionals contribute to this injustice.
To combat frivolous litigation that seeks to obstruct these rights, the Supreme Court imposed a fine of Rs300,000 on the petitioner for presenting “baseless claims.” Additionally, the ruling stipulates that the collected fine should be distributed among the sisters who have been unfairly deprived of their inheritance.
