SCO Summit
Ahead of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of Government (CHG) meeting, scheduled to be held in Islamabad, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has given approval for a comprehensive plan to ensure foolproof security during the high-profile summit.
This critical decision was made during a high-level meeting chaired by Naqvi at the Ministry of Interior, focusing on preparations for the upcoming regional leaders’ huddle on October 15-16.
The meeting was attended by senior officials, including the federal secretary of interior, additional secretaries, the chief commissioner of Islamabad, the inspector general of Islamabad police, the Islamabad deputy commissioner, the deputy commandant of the Frontier Corps (FC), a sector commander from Pakistan Rangers, and representatives from various security agencies.
These top officials conducted a thorough review of security arrangements for the SCO Summit, which concluded with the approval of a comprehensive security plan.
In his remarks, Naqvi stressed the importance of hosting the SCO Summit in Pakistan, highlighting that several heads of state from member countries will be attending the event.
To ensure the success of the summit, he announced the deployment of additional personnel from the Pakistan Army, Rangers, FC, and Punjab police, who will be tasked with various security duties.
Naqvi also underscored that all relevant departments must collaborate effectively to ensure the summit is conducted peacefully and securely.
In addition to security arrangements, Naqvi emphasized that special measures will be taken to enhance the beautification and cleanliness of Islamabad in preparation for the event. These efforts aim to present the capital city in its best form as it welcomes regional leaders.
Earlier, in a July briefing, Foreign Office Spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch had provided details of the upcoming summit, noting that it would include a ministerial meeting and multiple rounds of senior officials’ meetings.
These discussions are intended to strengthen cooperation among SCO member states in areas such as finance, economics, socio-cultural affairs, and humanitarian initiatives.
Baloch also pointed out that 2024 marks a significant milestone for Pakistan within the SCO framework, as the country has assumed the rotational Chairmanship of the SCO Council of Heads of Government, which is the organisation’s second-most important decision-making body.
Pakistan had extended invitations to all heads of government from SCO member states, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, for the upcoming summit.
It is worth noting that Pakistan took over the chair of the SCO CHG in October of the previous year and is slated to host more than 80 events related to the organisation until November 2024.
