Israeli airstrike targets central Beirut, marking first such incident in 18 years

Hamas announced that an Israeli airstrike killed its leader in Lebanon, Fateh Sherif Abu el-Amin, along with his family, during a strike on their home in a Palestinian refugee camp in Tyre early Monday.

Additionally, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) reported that three of its leaders were killed in an Israeli strike targeting the Kola district of Beirut, marking the first attack within the city’s limits in 18 years.

Israel has intensified its military operations against Iranian-aligned groups in the region, including Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Houthis in Yemen. On Sunday, Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon reportedly killed at least 105 people, with over 1,000 casualties reported in the last two weeks, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry.

The strikes have led to widespread displacement, with one million people fleeing their homes.

In response to the attacks, Hezbollah stated that it targets Israeli sites as retaliation for assaults on civilians.

Israeli officials have not commented on the recent strikes, but the military has vowed to continue its operations to secure northern areas of Israel from Hezbollah rocket attacks.

U.S. President Joe Biden emphasized the need for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict while also authorizing military reinforcements in the region.
