ISLAMABAD: The Inspector General (IG) of Islamabad Police has informed the Islamabad High Court about the confirmed illegal detention of three citizens at the Sangjani police station.
In a submitted inquiry report, Islamabad Police chief Ali Nasir Rizvi stated that the allegations against the Sangjani police, stemming from an incident on August 30, were validated. A case was officially registered on September 19.
As a result of the findings, the Station House Officer (SHO) involved has been arrested and suspended, with departmental proceedings now underway. The IG noted that the inquiry officer was also suspended, and a special investigation team has been established to address the situation.
In addition, the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) for Trinol has been suspended, and a chargesheet has been issued. The Superintendent of Police (SP) has been summoned for an explanation, and a committee comprising two Deputy Inspector Generals (DIGs) has been formed to oversee the investigation.
The petitioner’s lawyer highlighted the IG’s commitment to transparency, praising the detailed and honest nature of the report submitted.
Justice Aamir Farooq acknowledged the positive action taken by the police chief, stating, “Good deeds should be lauded.” He emphasized the necessity for checks and balances within the police force to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.
The court pointed out that high-ranking police officials are involved, stating, “This is not just the work of an ASI or SHO.”
The judges urged the IG to investigate thoroughly, without naming specific individuals, and subsequently dismissed the petition, reinforcing the need for accountability and vigilance within the police department.
