UN General Assembly
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is set to attend the 79th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) from September 23 to 27, where he will address critical global issues, including Palestine, Islamophobia, and the longstanding disputes surrounding Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). His address is scheduled for September 27, as confirmed by the Foreign Office in a recent statement.
The Prime Minister is currently on a short tour in London and will depart for New York shortly. He expressed his commitment to presenting Pakistan’s perspective on significant international matters through a post on social media, stating, “Departing for New York to represent Pakistan at the 79th UN General Assembly. Looking forward to a busy week full of engagements.”
During his address at the UNGA, PM Shehbaz intends to emphasize the necessity of addressing issues that have long occupied the agenda of the UN Security Council (UNSC).
He plans to reaffirm Pakistan’s dedication to multilateralism and the UN’s role in fostering global peace, security, and prosperity.
In particular, he will focus on the inequities in international economic relations and the need for reform in the international financial architecture.
Additionally, the Prime Minister will highlight Pakistan’s commitment to placing people at the center of both domestic and global development agendas.
As an incoming member of the UNSC for the years 2025-2026, he aims to work collaboratively with other UN member states to uphold the UN Charter, prevent conflicts, and promote global prosperity.
Furthermore, PM Shehbaz will urge the international community to take decisive action against climate change and counter the rising tide of Islamophobia.
His agenda at the UNGA includes attending several high-level meetings, such as the “High-Level Meeting on the Existential Threat Posed by Sea-Level Rise” and the UNSC’s open debate on “Leadership for Peace.”
While the Prime Minister is set for a busy schedule, the trip of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar was unexpectedly canceled just hours before PM Shehbaz’s departure for London.
The Foreign Office cited important upcoming diplomatic engagements and preparations for the 23rd meeting of the Council of Heads of Governments of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation as reasons for this change.
Overall, PM Shehbaz Sharif’s participation in the UNGA underscores Pakistan’s proactive stance on critical international issues and its commitment to working with the global community for peace, security, and development.
His meetings with various world leaders, including the UN Secretary-General and the UNGA President, are anticipated to bolster Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts on the international stage.
