Imran Khan remains hopeful about success of Lahore rally on September 21

ISLAMABAD: Imran Khan, the incarcerated founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, has voiced strong optimism regarding the upcoming rally in Lahore, scheduled for tomorrow (Saturday).

He emphasized the event as a “do-or-die” moment for his party, underscoring its commitment to mobilize despite potential government obstacles.

Speaking to reporters from Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on Thursday, Khan asserted that the Pakistani people would turn out for the rally regardless of the challenges they might face.

“I have been in jail for 15 months and am prepared to remain here even longer. People should not fear imprisonment,” he stated, reinforcing his long-standing message about the importance of constitutional rights.

Khan urged citizens to gather for the rally on September 21 to advocate for their future, warning that the country’s democratic framework is at risk. “If the Supreme Court is undermined, Pakistan could devolve into a banana republic,” he cautioned.

The former Prime Minister expressed concerns over proposed amendments to the Constitution, criticizing the lack of transparent discussion and suggesting that such maneuvers threaten democratic integrity.

“To undermine the Supreme Court is to dismantle democracy; when democracy falters, freedom is lost, and people become enslaved,” he remarked.

He highlighted ongoing injustices, noting that many have faced prolonged detention without trial, while political elites benefit from constitutional amendments. Khan criticized leaders like Zardari and Nawaz Sharif, asserting they would flee the country again, taking their wealth with them.

Khan also referenced the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), claiming it has shifted from its original mandate to a tool for political revenge. He raised questions about Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi’s wealth, alleging financial misconduct.

Additionally, today’s special accountability court session will address the £190 million case against Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, with ongoing cross-examinations of witnesses by their legal team.
