National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq has called for decisive action following the recent arrests of multiple PTI lawmakers, both within and outside the Parliament House. Addressing the assembly on Tuesday, Sadiq emphasized the need for accountability, stating, “Action must be taken over what occurred in parliament last night.”
Sadiq has ordered the retrieval of CCTV footage from all entry points and internal areas of the Parliament House, including gate numbers one and five, the cabinet side gate, and inside the building. He expressed his frustration, noting that he has witnessed several disturbances during his tenure, including the 2014 alleged attack on Parliament House. At that time, he filed an FIR against the involved party and indicated he would take similar steps if necessary.
The Speaker has summoned Ali Muhammad Khan, Syed Naveed Qamar, and Azam Nazeer Tarar for a discussion to address the situation, urging them to resolve the matter through dialogue.
Additionally, PTI MNA Ali Muhammad Khan has provided all relevant footage from the incidents in question. Other key figures, including Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party President Abdul Aleem Khan, JUI-F’s Noor Alam Khan, MQM’s Aminul Haq, Rana Sanaullah, Shandana Gulzar, and Sahibzada Hamid Raza, are also part of the ongoing consultations.
Sadiq has also called in the Islamabad police chief, along with the DIG and SSP, instructing them to present details of the cases against the assembly members involved.
Law Minister Calls for Restraint
Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar called for restraint and emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law amidst rising political tensions. He cautioned that heightened emotions could lead to increased divisiveness, stressing the need for a measured approach. Tarar pledged to address any wrongdoings and work towards a resolution, stating, “I will accept the wrong done and correct it.”
Critique of PTI’s Commitment to Democracy
Federal Minister Rana Tanveer Hussain sharply criticized PTI, questioning the party’s dedication to democratic principles and the rule of law. He recalled past incidents where PTI members allegedly compromised the dignity of Parliament and questioned their commitment to democratic values.
Naveed Qamar Condemns PTI Leaders’ Actions
PPP MNA Naveed Qamar described the allegations surrounding the arrests as a “serious matter.” He referenced the 2014 PTI sit-in, stating that any intrusion into Parliament is a severe violation. He warned that failure to act decisively could lead to further escalation, urging his party’s ally, PML-N, to take necessary action.
