Sonya Hussyn
A-list film and TV actor Sonya Hussyn recently shared her perspective on the issues of nepotism and colorism within the entertainment industry. In a candid interview with fellow actor Ushna Shah, Hussyn offered her views on these claims and provided advice for aspiring actors.
Hussyn addressed the common assertions that nepotism and colorism are major obstacles for newcomers in Pakistan’s showbiz industry.
She expressed skepticism about these claims, suggesting that while favoritism may exist to some degree, it should not be viewed as an insurmountable barrier for talented individuals.
According to Hussyn, the focus for aspiring actors should be on honing their craft and excelling in their work rather than attributing their lack of opportunities to external factors.
“I don’t know if I should say this,” Hussyn began, “but I’ve seen many newcomers making excuses about not getting work due to prevailing colorism and nepotism in the industry. But literally, this is not the case.”
She acknowledged that while favoritism might be a factor, a strong commitment to one’s craft can overcome these challenges. “If you know your work, and are skilled in your craft, then nothing in the world can stop you from excelling in it,” she added.
Hussyn emphasized the importance of sincerity and dedication in pursuing a career in acting. “You need to be really sincere with your work,” she advised.
“Rather than focusing on what the other person is doing or trying to adopt what someone else is doing, if you have your focus in the right direction, nothing can ever get in your way to success.”
In contrast, Ushna Shah, who was also part of the discussion, acknowledged the role of luck in the entertainment industry.
Shah pointed out that while many people dream of making it in showbiz, only a fortunate few get the opportunity to showcase their talent. “This also has a lot to do with luck, and we cannot deny it,” said Shah. “It’s not only about luck, but it is definitely an important factor.”
Both actors provided valuable insights into the dynamics of the entertainment industry, with Hussyn urging newcomers to concentrate on their skills and Shah recognizing the role of chance in achieving success.
Their conversation highlights the complex interplay of talent, dedication, and luck in the pursuit of a successful career in showbiz.
