In Kurakhove, a front-line town in Ukraine’s war-torn Donbas region, life has become a daily struggle for survival. The ongoing conflict has severely impacted local businesses, including that of Inna, a local baker.
Amid the destruction wrought by Russian bombings and the advancing Russian troops, Inna’s small bakery operation has dwindled to just making a few pies and chebureki, which she takes to a local hospital for nurses to purchase.
This modest effort constitutes her daily business as Ukrainian forces continue to repel Russian attacks on the town.
Inna and others rely heavily on Kurakhove Roll Call, a Telegram channel with 8,000 subscribers, which serves as a crucial communication lifeline for civilians in this perilous region.
The channel is a source of real-time updates about the conflict, providing information on shelling, casualties, and evacuation instructions. Its twin channel, Kurakhove Without Panic, which boasts 16,000 subscribers, is managed by the same anonymous administrator. This anonymity is essential for safety amidst the political and social upheaval in the area.
The channels post crucial updates from regional authorities, including alarming reports of frequent shelling and damage. For instance, a recent update described a barrage of 13 shelling incidents in Kurakhove, resulting in injuries, property damage, and significant evacuations.
The channels frequently issue air raid alerts, advising residents to switch their phones to silent mode and providing emergency contact information. Despite the grim tone, the information shared is vital for the community’s survival.
Telegram’s messaging app has become an indispensable tool for residents, offering a platform to receive updates even when reception is inconsistent. The app allows users to receive text messages and download multimedia content, making it a key resource for managing their safety amidst the chaos.
However, the administrator notes that maintaining audience engagement can be challenging due to the volume of competing channels and the time required for content moderation.
The channels also serve as a space for practical advice and local updates. Users share information about available services, such as functioning post offices and pharmacies, while others discuss the high prices of essential goods.
Messages often reflect the frustration and desperation of the residents, with some complaining about extortionate prices and others debating whether to stay or evacuate.
For many, staying is a necessity rather than a choice. Some are unable to leave due to age, disability, or financial constraints. Inna, for instance, remains in Kurakhove to care for her elderly mother, despite the constant threat of shelling.
Others stay behind to tend to farms or livestock, unable to abandon their livelihoods. The fear of conscription into the Ukrainian army also deters some men of fighting age from evacuating.
Meanwhile, those who can evacuate often rely on services like Vova’s, who advertises transportation to safety. Vova, a 30-year-old veteran of the conflict, charges 70 hryvnias ($1.70) per kilometer for his services.
His experience in navigating the dangers of the conflict zone has taught him to drive at high speeds to avoid Russian drone attacks.
Despite his skill and experience, he faces the constant danger of roadblocks and rigorous checks by conscription officers. Vova’s ultimate goal is to save enough to rent a place for himself and his mother, who is reluctant to leave their home despite the risks.
In the midst of the conflict, Kurakhove’s residents, whether staying behind or seeking to escape, navigate a perilous existence, balancing their immediate survival with the enduring hope for a safer future.
