Parliament Elections
Azerbaijan is conducting early parliamentary elections following President Ilham Aliyev’s decision to dissolve the existing parliament and advance the general election that was initially scheduled for November.
This significant move has set the stage for a crucial electoral event in the country’s political landscape.
In this early election, a total of 990 candidates are competing for 125 seats in the Azerbaijani parliament. With 6,421,000 registered voters expected to participate, the election is anticipated to be a major turnout event.
The electorate will have the opportunity to vote for candidates representing 25 different political parties, including the ruling New Azerbaijan Party, which is led by President Aliyev. Independent candidates will also be on the ballot, offering voters a diverse array of choices.
The voting process is scheduled to take place from 08:00 to 19:00 local time (0400 to 1500 GMT) on Sunday.
The election will be closely observed, with 112,000 local observers and 604 foreign observers, including a delegation from the Turkish parliament, monitoring the process to ensure its integrity and transparency.
This election is particularly historic as it marks the first time in 30 years that parliamentary elections are being conducted across the entirety of Azerbaijan’s territory.
This includes areas that were recently liberated from Armenian occupation, which had previously been outside of Azerbaijan’s administrative control.
The inclusion of polling stations in cities such as Shusha, Khankendi, and other former Armenian-controlled regions like Khojaly, Khojavend, Agdam, and Fuzuli highlights the significance of these elections in affirming the country’s sovereignty over its full territory.
More than 42,000 voters are registered in these newly integrated regions, underscoring the broad and inclusive nature of this electoral process.
