CJ Qazi Faez Isa calling on chief justices of high courts to propose additional judges

Chief Justice of Pakistan, Qazi Faez Isa, has urged the chief justices of the nation’s high courts to begin the process of nominating additional judges.

In a letter dated August 28, 2024, Justice Isa highlighted the crucial need to fill judicial vacancies to maintain the efficient functioning of the courts.

Justice Isa pointed out that the Supreme Court, which includes himself and fifteen other judges, resumed its full operations on June 25, 2024, after being partially inactive for two and a half years.

Additionally, the Shariat Appellate Bench became operational again following the appointment of a second aalim member in July.

Emphasizing the importance of a transparent and democratic approach, Justice Isa called on the high courts to carefully evaluate potential candidates for judicial appointments.

He stressed the necessity of adhering to the principles established by the Judicial Commission of Pakistan, which was created in 2010 to enhance transparency in the nomination process.

Justice Isa also mentioned that a committee has proposed amendments to the existing rules governing judicial appointments, with discussions on these changes currently underway.

He urged that all potential candidates be considered promptly, especially in situations where there are more than five vacancies, to ensure thorough deliberation and the selection of the most qualified individuals for the judiciary.
