The Turkish metropolis of Istanbul hosted the “Samsung Bosphorus Cross-Continental Swimming Race” for the 36th time, organized by the Turkish National Olympic Committee on Sunday.
Over 2,800 athletes from more than 70 countries participated in the 6.5-kilometre (4-mile) course, which spanned from Kanlica Pier on the Anatolian side to Kurucesme on the European side.
While swimmers raced through the iconic Istanbul Strait, enjoying breathtaking city views, spectators watched from the shores.
In the women’s general category, Talya Erdogan claimed first place with a time of 46 minutes and 57 seconds. Nehir Guler followed closely, finishing second with 47 minutes and 16 seconds, while Su Inal secured third place with 47 minutes and 39 seconds.
Talya Erdogan expressed that her first experience racing in the Strait was enjoyable. Guler and Inal also shared their positive experiences and extended their gratitude to those who contributed to the event’s organization.
In the men’s general category, Atakan Ercan emerged as the winner with a time of 45 minutes and 27 seconds. Dogukan Ulac took second place, finishing in 45 minutes and 36 seconds, and Mevlut Efe Guler came in third with 45 minutes and 40 seconds.
Ercan, competing for the second time, remarked that the race was easier than he had anticipated. Last year’s winner, Ulac, who finished second this year, also praised the event and thanked the supporters.
The race was first organized by the Turkish National Olympic Committee on July 23, 1989, with support from the International Olympic Committee and 68 participating swimmers. Since 2010, swimmers who complete the course have been awarded the ‘Intercontinental Swimmer’ certificate.
The event was named the ‘Best Open Water Swimming Organisation of the Year’ by the World Open Water Swimming Association (WOWSA) in 2016 and topped the ‘World’s 100 Best Open Water Swimming Races’ list in 2019.
