PM Shehbaz Extends Support to Bangladesh Amid Devastating Floods

Devastating Floods

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has expressed deep sorrow and solidarity with Bangladesh over the recent devastating floods that have wreaked havoc across the country.

In a gesture of goodwill and support, PM Shehbaz has offered Pakistan’s assistance to help Bangladesh navigate through this challenging period.

In a letter addressed to Bangladesh’s Chief Adviser Dr. Mohammad Yunus, PM Shehbaz Sharif conveyed heartfelt condolences on behalf of the people and government of Pakistan.

He emphasized that Pakistan stands with Bangladesh during this time of crisis and expressed hope that the nation would soon overcome the difficulties posed by the floods.

The Prime Minister assured Bangladesh of Pakistan’s readiness to extend all possible support and assistance to aid in relief efforts.

He highlighted the strong bond between the two nations and stressed the importance of regional solidarity in the face of natural disasters.

Shehbaz Sharif also praised the resilience and courage of the Bangladeshi people, acknowledging their strength in the face of such adversity.

He expressed confidence that the spirit and determination of the Bangladeshi nation would help them recover from the devastating impact of the floods.

The flood situation in Bangladesh has been dire, particularly in the eastern parts of the country.

According to the Bangladesh Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, the floods, caused by torrential rainfall, have resulted in the tragic loss of at least 13 lives and displaced approximately 4.5 million people.

The ministry also reported that large swathes of low-lying areas have been submerged, with rescue operations ongoing to evacuate those affected.

Nearly 190,000 people have been relocated to emergency relief shelters as floodwaters inundate 11 of the 64 districts in the country.

The worst-hit area has been identified as Feni, located around 60 miles (100 kilometers) northwest of Chittagong, Bangladesh’s main port city.

The situation has been exacerbated by the country’s geography, with hundreds of rivers crisscrossing the densely populated South Asian nation, making it particularly vulnerable to flooding.

Floods have become increasingly common in Bangladesh, a nation of 170 million people, due to its low-lying terrain and the impact of climate change.

The Global Climate Risk Index has identified Bangladesh as one of the countries most at risk from natural disasters and the adverse effects of climate change.

In light of this, PM Shehbaz Sharif’s offer of assistance underscores the importance of regional cooperation in addressing the challenges posed by climate change and natural disasters.

As Bangladesh continues to grapple with the aftermath of the floods, Pakistan’s willingness to provide support reflects the enduring ties between the two nations and the shared responsibility to aid those in need during times of crisis.
