Jamaat-e-Islami threatens to launch a nationwide boycott of electricity bills.

Jamaat-e-Islami’s (JI) Emir, Hafiz Naeemur Rehman, issued a strong warning to the government on Sunday, indicating that they may initiate a nationwide movement against paying electricity bills if their demands are not addressed.

This statement came during the party’s ongoing sit-in at Liaquat Bagh, now in its tenth day.

In a speech to the protesters, Hafiz Naeem reiterated Jamaat-e-Islami’s commitment to its seven-point agenda and emphasized their unwillingness to compromise on their demands.

He urged the Prime Minister to take swift action to lower electricity bills, framing it as vital for the government’s political survival.

Hafiz Naeem accused the government of duplicity, claiming that while negotiations are taking place, the government’s subsequent actions often contradict the promises made during discussions.

He pointed to the issue of inflated electricity bills, attributing part of the problem to alleged mismanagement and corruption involving Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

Hafiz Naeem also criticized the MQM for its political opportunism, asserting that the party aligns with different governments solely to secure its share of power and resources.

He expressed frustration over the government’s failure to address key issues raised during the sit-in, such as the rising cost of living and excessive utility bills.

The ongoing sit-in, a central part of Jamaat-e-Islami’s campaign, aims to confront rising inflation and skyrocketing electricity costs. Despite extended negotiations, the party has not yet reached an agreement with the government.

Hafiz Naeemur Rehman also hinted at a forthcoming announcement of a dharna (sit-in) in Lahore in the next few days, signaling an escalation in their protest strategy.
