Heavy Rains in Sindh: Two Dead from Flooding

Heavy Rains

Heavy rains have caused widespread devastation across Sindh, impacting several districts including Jamshoro, Mirpurkhas, Naushahro Feroze, Bhit Shah, New Saeedabad, Matiari, Hala, and Mehar.

The torrential downpours, which began on Saturday night, have led to severe flooding in low-lying areas, raising significant concerns about extensive damage to crops and infrastructure.

In Jamshoro, the impact of the rains has been particularly severe. A tragic incident occurred when a house collapsed under the weight of the downpour, resulting in the deaths of two individuals, including a woman.

The mountainous regions of Jamshoro have been severely affected, with floodwaters inundating homes and sweeping away livestock.

Additionally, the heavy rains have disrupted road connectivity between Jamshoro and several nearby villages, further complicating the situation for residents.

The situation is similarly dire in the districts of Mirpurkhas and Naushahro Feroze. These areas, along with Bhit Shah, New Saeedabad, Matiari, Hala, and Mehar, have experienced continuous and heavy rainfall, leading to widespread flooding.

Major highways in these regions have been transformed into expansive water bodies, significantly impacting transportation and access.

Power supply has also been heavily disrupted, with several feeders tripping due to the extreme weather. This has led to widespread power outages, exacerbating the difficulties faced by residents in the affected areas.

The ongoing rains have heightened concerns about potential damage to crops, as the flooding threatens to undermine agricultural productivity.

In addition to the devastation in Sindh, the district of Qilla Saifullah in Balochistan has been hit by torrential rains, causing the Zawar River to overflow.

There are fears of breaches in the torrential streams near Mughalkot, adding to the region’s woes.

The Kashmir region has not been spared either, with continuous monsoon rains affecting districts such as Muzaffarabad, Neelum, Jhelum Valley, Haveli, Bagh, and Poonch.

The water levels in the Neelum River have surged, leading to increased flooding. The Muzaffarabad Road at the Dolai area has been closed due to a landslide, creating additional challenges for both tourists and residents.

In Upper Chitral, a glacier burst has caused severe flooding in the Boni stream, leading to the destruction of a connecting bridge and the submersion of cultivated crops.

Several homes have been damaged, prompting residents to evacuate to safety. An emergency has been declared, and tents have been set up at the Gahilay Ground to accommodate those affected.

The Chief Minister has ordered the immediate relocation of affected populations and the cancellation of leave for relevant staff to address the crisis.

The Yarkhun Valley in Chitral has been cut off from Mastuj due to the heavy rains, and areas such as Arson and Kalash have also suffered significant damage, with floodwaters sweeping away crops, shops, and buildings.

The Frontier Corps North is actively involved in emergency rescue operations, and all agencies are on high alert as forecasts predict more rainfall in the coming days.
