A Pakistan International Airlines air hostess was apprehended while attempting to smuggle currency at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport.
Customs officials discovered that she had hidden 140,000 Saudi riyals, equivalent to approximately Rs140,000 or $37,000, in her socks.
The incident unfolded when the air hostess was offloaded from a flight bound for Jeddah after customs officials conducted routine checks. According to Deputy Collector Customs Raja Bilal, the concealed currency was found during these inspections, leading to her immediate detention.
Following the discovery, customs authorities registered a case against the suspect and referred her to the investigating officer for further action. This incident highlights the continuous efforts by customs officials to combat illegal currency smuggling at the airport and ensure compliance with regulations.
The authorities have intensified their scrutiny of travelers and airline staff in recent months as part of a broader initiative to address the growing issue of currency smuggling. The successful apprehension of the air hostess serves as a warning to others who may consider similar illegal activities.
Customs officials are committed to maintaining the integrity of Pakistan’s borders and preventing the illicit movement of foreign currency, which can have significant economic implications. This case underscores the importance of vigilance in safeguarding the countryโs financial systems and preventing potential criminal activities at airports.
The ongoing investigations will likely examine the broader network involved in such smuggling activities, as authorities strive to dismantle operations that threaten the economic stability of the nation. The swift action taken in this case demonstrates customs officials’ dedication to their responsibilities in protecting Pakistan’s interests.
