PML-N and PTI each lose one key member

In Lahore, the political landscape witnessed significant shifts as both the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf faced departures from prominent figures within their ranks.

Dr. Syed Asif Kirmani, a long-time loyalist of Nawaz Sharif, bid farewell to the PML-N, while former minister Shafqat Mahmood announced his retirement from politics a day later, dealing a blow to the PTI.

Shafqat Mahmood, in a series of tweets on Sunday, revealed his decision to step away from active politics, citing reasons of advancing age and the current political climate. He expressed his intention to focus on writing columns, an autobiography, and engaging with the media, clarifying that his departure was not influenced by external pressure or plans to switch parties.

During his 34-year political career, Mahmood held various key positions, including federal education minister under the PTI government. He highlighted achievements such as navigating the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic in the education sector and implementing a uniform curriculum.

Expressing gratitude to PTI founder Imran Khan and his supporters, Mahmood acknowledged the mixed reactions his retirement elicited, from accolades for his integrity and competence to criticism over his absence during pivotal party events.

Meanwhile, Asif Kirmani, formerly Nawaz Sharif’s political secretary, voiced concerns over internal dynamics within the PML-N, accusing a faction of “sycophants” of undermining the Sharifs’ political strategy.

He lamented decisions that diverged from Nawaz Sharif’s initial plans, particularly regarding participation in the PDM government post no-confidence motion against Imran Khan.

Kirmani’s departure and candid remarks underscored tensions within the PML-N’s leadership and strategic direction. He hinted at no immediate plans to join another party but expressed alignment with principles of respecting the vote and addressing public grievances.

These developments highlight the evolving political landscape in Pakistan, marked by the departure of seasoned figures and internal challenges within major political entities, setting the stage for potential realignments and shifts in national politics moving forward.
