Senior PTI Leader Shafqat Mahmood Announces Retirement from Politics

Former federal minister and senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shafqat Mahmood has announced his retirement from politics. In a statement posted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Mahmood shared that his decision came after much deliberation. He emphasized that he made the decision independently and has no intentions of joining another political party.

Shafqat Mahmood, who began his political journey 34 years ago after resigning from government service, expressed a desire to dedicate the rest of his life to writing and teaching. He clarified that his retirement pertains solely to his political career and is motivated by considerations of time and age. He voiced his support for the idea that younger generations should take the lead in politics.

Reflecting on his political journey, Mahmood highlighted its various highs and lows. He served as a member of both the Senate and National Assembly, held federal and provincial ministerial positions, and faced imprisonment. He expressed satisfaction with fulfilling his responsibilities with integrity.

Although he had filed nomination papers for the National Assembly Constituency 130 and the Punjab Assembly Constituency 170 in Lahore, Mahmood ultimately decided to step aside from the election.

In April 2022, following the downfall of the PTI government, former Prime Minister Imran Khan announced a “long march” to protest the government’s actions. However, participation in the march was significantly lower than anticipated. Mahmood acknowledged that the party was unprepared for the march at the time.

Subsequently, on June 3rd, Mahmood, then the federal education minister and PTI’s Punjab president, resigned from his party position, citing health reasons. Media reports suggested that PTI founder Imran Khan had asked him to resign for failing to mobilize the public in Punjab for the protest.

Mahmood’s announcement marks the end of a significant political career characterized by service, dedication, and a commitment to public duty. As he transitions to a new phase of life focused on writing and teaching, his departure opens the door for new leadership within the PTI and Pakistan’s broader political landscape.
