Delta Air Lines has revised its uniform policy following a controversy involving flight attendants wearing Palestinian flag pins.
This change comes after a passenger’s social media post, referring to the pins as “Hamas badges,” went viral and prompted criticism of the airline’s initial response.
Effective from Monday, the new policy prohibits employees from wearing pins representing any country other than the United States.
Initially, Delta responded to the social media post by assuring an investigation and later deleted the response, apologizing for its “hurtful post” and emphasizing values of inclusivity and respect.
Delta’s Association of Flight Attendants criticized the airline for its handling of the incident, stating that the flight attendants faced harassment after their photos circulated without consent. The union called Delta’s initial social media responses disrespectful to employees and demanded a public apology.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) also condemned Delta’s response as fostering “anti-Palestinian racism,” highlighting broader tensions related to Israel’s conflict with Hamas.
Before the controversy, Delta’s dress code allowed more flexibility with uniform accessories, aligning with the flight attendants’ choice to wear the Palestinian flag pins. Delta stated the policy change aims to maintain a welcoming environment for all employees and passengers.
