Married women, mothers, and divorcees are now eligible to apply for the upcoming annual beauty contest of Miss Universe Singapore in 2024.
This change, scheduled for September this year, marks an effort by the organization to embrace inclusivity and broaden its scope.
Previously, the competition was restricted to a specific demographic of unmarried, single women within a certain age range. These restrictions have now been lifted to promote a more diverse and equitable competition.
While the Miss Universe Organization removed the upper age limit starting in 2024, contestants must still be at least 18 years old to participate. They must also be Singapore residents with a minimum residency requirement of six months before September 1, 2024.
Additionally, a minimum height requirement of 1.68 meters has been set for contestants, which was not in place in 2023.
Miss Universe Singapore 2024 is jointly organized by Beyond Entity, a Malaysian firm with extensive pageantry experience, and King Kong Media Production, a regional entertainment company led by Singaporean actor Mark Lee.
The winner of Miss Universe Singapore 2024 will represent the nation at the international Miss Universe 2024 competition in Mexico in September and will receive a top prize of $10,000.
Elaine Daly, the 2003 Miss Universe Malaysia and national director of Miss Universe Singapore, emphasized the competition’s broader significance, stating, “This competition is more than just about crowning a winner. It provides a platform for contestants to advocate for causes that are meaningful to them. We are not just looking for beauty queens, but also future role models and leaders.”
