ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has suspended the membership of Sher Afzal Marwat, a prominent party figure and National Assembly member elected in the February 8 polls. The decision was made during a meeting between party founder Imran Khan and senior leaders at Adiala Jail on Thursday.
Party sources revealed that Marwat’s suspension follows ongoing violations of party discipline, including derogatory remarks directed at Imran Khan and other leaders. During the meeting, it was emphasized that no leader is above the party, with assurances that others would face similar consequences if they strayed from party lines.
Marwat’s response to a recent show-cause notice was reportedly deemed unsatisfactory. He had previously stated in London that Imran Khan did not want the public to protest, further fueling discontent within the party. In May, he was removed from key PTI committees on Khanโs orders due to a controversial statement about alleged Saudi involvement in the former prime minister’s ousting following a no-confidence motion.
The MNA has been vocal in blaming the United States and Saudi Arabia for conspiring to dismantle the PTI government, a position the party has publicly disavowed. Marwat has maintained that his comments reflect his personal views, despite PTI’s distancing from them.
Additionally, Marwat has expressed frustration with party leadership over perceived injustices, including the loss of the Public Accounts Committee chairmanship. He accused Senate opposition leader Shibli Faraz of relaying concerns from the Saudi ambassador regarding his nomination for the committee.
A formal statement regarding Marwat’s suspension is expected to be released today.
