US Condemns Violence, Vandalism, and Arson in May 9 Riots

WASHINGTON: The US State Department affirmed the right to protest while emphasizing that such actions should be peaceful, explicitly condemning violent actions, looting, and arson. These remarks were made by State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller during a news briefing on Monday.

In response to a question regarding the May 9 riots in Pakistan, Miller reiterated the US stance on supporting freedom of expression in a legitimate and non-violent manner. “We support legitimate, free expression, including the right to protest, the right to peaceful assembly, and we oppose violent actions, we oppose vandalism, looting, arson,” he stated.

Miller stressed that all protests should be conducted peacefully and that governments should handle such situations in accordance with the rule of law and respect for free speech.

The May 9 riots were triggered across Pakistan following the arrest of deposed Prime Minister Imran Khan in a £190 million settlement case last year. The unrest led to the imprisonment of hundreds of PTI workers and senior leaders for their involvement in violence and attacks on military installations. During the protests, miscreants targeted civil and military installations, including Jinnah House and the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi. The military termed May 9 “Black Day” and decided to try the protesters under the Army Act.

Acknowledging Pakistan’s significant sacrifices and contributions in the war against terrorism, the State Department recognized the severe impact terrorism has had on the country. Miller responded to comments from Pakistan’s Defence Minister Khawaja Asif, who stated that Pakistan would continue launching attacks against terrorist groups in Afghanistan as part of a new military campaign. Miller indicated that the US shares an interest in addressing regional security threats.

“We partner with a range of Pakistani civilian institutions and regularly engage with the Pakistani government to identify opportunities to build capacity and strengthen regional security, including in our annual high-level counter-terrorism dialogue,” Miller noted.

The US State Department’s comments highlight the importance of peaceful protest and the ongoing cooperation between the US and Pakistan in counter-terrorism efforts. This cooperation underscores the shared commitment to regional stability and the fight against terrorism. As the situation in Pakistan continues to evolve, the US remains a key partner in supporting lawful expression and security initiatives.
