In a pivotal match at the T20 World Cup 2024, South Africa clinched a significant victory against co-hosts West Indies, securing their spot in the semi-finals for the first time since 2014 and setting a new tournament record with their seventh consecutive win.

The Proteas’ achievement surpasses Sri Lanka’s record of six victories in the 2009 edition and matches Australia’s feat in both the 2010 and 2021 tournaments. This streak underscores South Africa’s formidable form and determination in the ongoing event.

The match, held at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound, Antigua, saw South Africa opt to bowl first after winning the toss. They executed their strategy effectively, restricting West Indies to 135-8 in their allotted 20 overs.

Chasing a revised target of 123 runs in 17 overs due to rain interruptions, South Africa navigated the challenge with resilience. They reached the target in 16.1 overs, albeit losing seven wickets along the way. The decisive moment came in the final over when Marco Jansen, in a crucial unbeaten cameo, smashed a six off the first ball, sealing victory with five runs needed.

The Proteas’ disciplined bowling and composed batting under pressure highlight their readiness for the knockout stages. Their performance not only secured a semi-final berth but also solidified their status as contenders for the T20 World Cup title.

With this milestone win, South Africa’s campaign in the tournament gains momentum, as they aim to carry their winning streak forward and potentially claim their maiden T20 World Cup championship. The team’s success underscores their preparation, resilience, and ability to perform under pressure on the global stage of cricket.
