Iranian Rapper Toomaj Salehi’s Death Sentence Overturned by Supreme Court

Iran’s Supreme Court has made a significant decision regarding the case of Toomaj Salehi, a popular rapper whose death sentence has been overturned. Salehi, initially sentenced to death on charges of “corruption on earth” and involvement in protests following the death of Mahsa Amini, will now face a retrial, according to his lawyer, Amir Raisian.

Toomaj Salehi, aged 33, was arrested in October 2022 after openly supporting demonstrations that erupted in response to the death of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian Kurd who died in police custody in Tehran. The protests, spanning several months, resulted in numerous casualties, including both civilians and security personnel, with thousands arrested under accusations of inciting riots and sedition.

The rapper’s initial sentence also included charges of “assistance in sedition, assembly and collusion, propaganda against the state, and calling for riots,” highlighting the severity with which Iranian authorities responded to the protests.

Amir Raisian, Salehi’s lawyer, praised the Supreme Court’s decision, describing it as preventing a grave judicial error. Additionally, the court ruled that Salehi’s previous sentence of six years and three months was improperly implemented for a range of offenses.

The protests following Mahsa Amini’s death underscored broader societal tensions in Iran, particularly concerning strict adherence to Islamic dress codes for women, which have been mandatory since the Islamic Revolution of 1979. Recent efforts by Iranian authorities to enforce these codes more rigorously include crackdowns on violators in public spaces and the implementation of laws seeking harsher penalties for non-compliance.

The case of Toomaj Salehi and the protests linked to Mahsa Amini’s death have drawn international attention, highlighting ongoing debates within Iran over civil liberties, state authority, and the rights of individuals to dissent peacefully.
