Sheikh Saleh Al Shaibi, Custodian of the Kaaba, passed away

Sheikh Saleh al Shaibi, revered as the custodian of the holy Kaaba in Makkah, passed away on Saturday following an extended illness, as reported.

Al Shaibi held the esteemed position of the chief key holder and custodian, continuing a lineage that stretches back to Uthman bin Talha, a companion of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), who was initially entrusted with the key to the Kaaba.

In 2013, he assumed the role, becoming the 109th in line and the 77th member of his family to serve in this sacred responsibility—a tradition upheld across centuries.

The duties of Al Shaibi’s family encompassed the meticulous management of the Kaaba, encompassing tasks such as maintenance, cleaning, washing, ironing, and repairing its Kiswa (cover). They also welcomed and assisted visitors, overseeing all aspects related to the Kaaba’s upkeep.

Beyond his custodial duties, Al Shaibi was a distinguished scholar, having earned a doctorate in Islamic studies. He further enriched Islamic scholarship through his writings, which included several notable books on religious teachings and historical insights.

The passing of Sheikh Saleh Al Shaibi has deeply affected Saudi Arabia, prompting expressions of sorrow from King Salman bin Abdul Aziz and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.

The custodian will be laid to rest at the Al Mu’alla Cemetery in Makkah, marking the end of an era for his family’s longstanding dedication to the service of Islam’s holiest site.
