T20 World Cup: Pakistan Eliminated as USA-Ireland Match Abandoned Due to Rain

T20 World Cup

Pakistan and Ireland have both been eliminated from the T20 World Cup following the abandonment of the match between the USA and Ireland due to rain on Friday.

Efforts by the ground staff to clear standing water from the outfield were in vain as intermittent rain continued to plague the venue.

South Florida has been experiencing severe rain and flooding, which also led to the abandonment of the game between Sri Lanka and Nepal on Tuesday at Lauderhill.

With the Group A match between the USA and Ireland called off, the USA secured their place in the Super Eights stage along with group leader India.

Both teams earned a point each from the abandoned match, rendering the outcome of the Pakistan and Ireland match irrelevant and sealing the standings in Group A, which also included these archrivals.

Pakistan’s performance throughout the tournament has been disappointing. They suffered heavy defeats to co-hosts USA and archrival India.

Fans and cricket experts worldwide have criticized the team for their lackluster showing in the T20 World Cup.

One of the tournament’s highlights was the Super Over thriller in Texas on June 7, where the USA, making their T20 World Cup debut, defeated the 2022 finalists and 2009 winners Pakistan in one of the most significant upsets in the competition’s history.

In another major setback on June 10, Pakistan’s batting lineup collapsed against India, failing to chase a modest target of 120 runs.

Legendary fast bowler Wasim Akram did not hold back in his criticism of the national team, calling for significant changes.

In a TV show following the loss to India, he expressed his frustration: “The Pakistan team doesn’t need enemies. They themselves are enough. Should we spoon-feed them everything? Should we need to tell them what the situation is? Now I’ve started feeling embarrassed. As a Pakistani, I want to back the Pakistan team, but there is a limit to everything. It was a very sad day for Pakistan cricket, unfortunately.”

The T20 World Cup has highlighted the need for a comprehensive review and overhaul of the Pakistan cricket team to address the glaring issues that have led to their early exit from the tournament.
