ISLAMABAD: Former cricketer Basit Ali has announced that a significant reshuffle in the Pakistan cricket team is imminent following their poor performance in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.
Speaking on an ARY News, Basit Ali revealed that at least nine players are set to be dropped from the national team after the Men in Green suffered two consecutive defeats in the tournament.
Although he did not name the players, Ali mentioned that approximately 70 percent of the team will be changed after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024.
According to Basit Ali, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi was furious due to the team’s disappointing performance in the tournament.
Ali also noted that the PCB selection committee might face dismissal after Pakistan’s poor showing, which included a loss to the United States in their opening game.
He emphasized that the new management will introduce fresh faces and make better decisions regarding player selection.
Despite the setbacks, former cricketer pointed out that Pakistan still has a chance to qualify for the Super 8 if they can win their remaining matches with a superior run-rate.
The Men in Green need to win their upcoming games against Canada and Ireland and rely on other teams to defeat the US, which is currently ranked second in Group A. Additionally, Pakistan must ensure their run-rate surpasses that of the US to secure a spot in the Super 8.
Pakistan’s campaign started with a shocking defeat to the US in their opening game, which was decided in a super over. Mohammad Amir bowled the super over for Pakistan, conceding 18 runs, and Pakistan managed only 13 runs in response.
On June 9, Pakistan faced archrivals India in New York and lost by six runs in a low-scoring thriller.
Jasprit Bumrah was instrumental in India’s victory, recording bowling figures of 3-14 in four overs, as Babar Azam’s side fell short of the 120-run target.
