Weekly Inflation in Pakistan Edges Upward with Minor Increase

Weekly Inflation

The Federal Bureau of Statistics has released data indicating a slight uptick in weekly inflation, with figures showing a 0.11 percent increase last week, pushing the annual inflation rate to 21.40 percent.

This marginal rise is attributed to escalating prices of essential commodities, exerting pressure on households nationwide. The report highlights price hikes in 14 key commodities over the past week.

Notable increases include tomatoes, up by Rs 6.63 per kg, onions rising by Rs 3.51 per kg, and dal mash experiencing a significant surge of Rs 10.92 per kg. Other items such as bananas, milk, potatoes, and cigarettes have also seen price increments.

Conversely, some relief came from reductions in certain commodity prices. Eggs saw a decrease of Rs 15.77 per dozen, while the cost of a domestic LPG cylinder dropped by Rs 150.69. Flour and sugar prices also witnessed declines, providing a slight reprieve for consumers.

Certain items, such as mutton, ghee, and cooking oil, maintained stable prices throughout the week, offering consistency for consumers.

A comparison with the previous year reveals a mixed picture. Onions have surged by 82 percent in price, followed by a 60 percent increase in red pepper prices and a 53 percent rise in tomato costs.

Garlic prices rose by 48 percent, salt by 31 percent, and dal mash by 24 percent. Additionally, beef prices climbed by 23 percent and sugar by 20 percent. Notably, gas charges experienced a staggering 570 percent surge over the past year.

The cumulative effect of these price fluctuations underscores the ongoing challenge for consumers in managing household budgets amidst persistent inflationary pressures.

Government efforts to stabilize prices and ensure affordability remain critical in addressing the concerns of the populace.
