ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder and former Prime Minister Imran Khan was acquitted in two cases related to the May 9 violence.
The District and Sessions Court heard the bail pleas, with Judicial Magistrate Omar Shahab delivering the verdict on two cases registered at Shahzad Town Police Station.
The court cited insufficient evidence and acquitted Imran Khan in both cases. His counsel, Mirza Asim Beg and Naeem Panjotha, had presented arguments on the bail pleas.
The FIR had been filed by an unauthorized individual, charging the PTI founder under Section 109, but no evidence was presented, according to the lawyer’s statements.
Earlier, Imran Khan filed a plea seeking acquittal in the May 9 violence cases. His counsel, Naeem Panjutha, appeared before the court and filed the plea on behalf of Imran Khan.
During the proceedings, Judicial Magistrate Sohaib Bilal inquired about the number of cases against Imran Khan and whether the challan (charge sheet) had been collected.
Naeem Panjutha informed the court that Imran Khan’s Tosha Khanna sentence was suspended, while sentences in other cases were still pending.
The May 9 violence erupted across Pakistan following Imran Khan’s arrest on May 9, 2023. Protests took place in various cities, with PTI workers agitated over their chairman’s detention.
Balochistan, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Islamabad saw widespread protests, prompting authorities to call in the armed forces to maintain law and order.
Army installations, including the Corps Commander’s house in Lahore, were targeted during the protests by PTI workers.
