Pakistan Reaffirms Support for China’s Stance on Taiwan, Emphasizing ‘One China’ Policy

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to the “One China” policy on Sunday, emphasizing Islamabad’s consistent support for Beijing regarding the Taiwan issue. He described Taiwan as an inalienable part of China.

“Pakistan has always extended its principled support to the Chinese position on Taiwan and will continue to do so. Pakistan adheres to the ‘One China’ policy,” PM Shehbaz stated on X, formerly known as Twitter.

The Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated Pakistan’s support for China’s efforts towards national reunification, emphasizing that the so-called elections or transitions of Taiwan’s self-proclaimed government do not alter the fundamental facts of the Taiwan issue.

“Pakistan reaffirms its commitment to the One China policy,” he said.

The “One China” policy, referenced by PM Shehbaz, signifies diplomatic acknowledgment and support for Beijing’s stance that there is only one Chinese government. This policy is a cornerstone of Beijing’s diplomacy and a fundamental aspect of its relations with countries like the United States.

According to the BBC, Taiwan began its separate governance after nationalists retreated to the island following the Chinese Civil War. China considers Taiwan to be a part of its territory, destined for eventual reunification with the mainland.

Under the “One China” policy, any country seeking diplomatic relations with China cannot maintain official ties with Taiwan, as Beijing insists that Taiwan is part of mainland China.
