LAHORE: Acting President Yousuf Raza Gilani hinted at the possibility of the PPP aligning with the PML-N in Punjab’s government if offered a substantial role. Gilani, filling in as the acting president during Asif Ali Zardari’s absence, conveyed these sentiments while engaging with reporters at his residence on Saturday.
Gilani, representing the PPP, expressed openness to the idea of his party joining Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s cabinet, contingent upon receiving adequate representation in the provincial administration.
Moreover, Gilani addressed the recent passage of the Defamation Bill, 2024 by the Punjab Assembly, which ignited significant controversy. The bill now awaits Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem’s signature to become law. The governor’s inclination to potentially return the bill to the assembly for further deliberation reflects broader disapproval from the PPP leadership regarding its provisions.
Gilani disclosed that he extensively discussed the bill with PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, stressing the party’s stance on ensuring that journalists’ concerns are adequately addressed before finalizing the legislation.
Earlier, during a gathering of party workers at his residence, Gilani underscored the PPP’s unwavering commitment to political stability, which he deemed indispensable for fostering economic progress, as reported by APP.
The gathering witnessed the presence of Gilani’s sons and PPP lawmakers, Ali Qasim Gilani, Ali Qadir Gilani, Ali Musa Gilani, and Syed Haider Gilani, alongside other prominent party leaders.
These developments highlight the PPP’s strategic positioning and its readiness to engage in collaborative efforts for effective governance, while also emphasizing its dedication to safeguarding press freedom and advocating for the concerns of journalists.
